FIFTH MISSION INNOVATION MINISTERIAL (MI-5)

The 5th Mission Innovation (MI)Ministerial (MI-5) was hosted virtually by HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud on Wednesday, 23 September 2020, where MI members agreed to work together on the development of an ambitious second phase of MI.The next phase of MI will build on successes and shift focus toward outcomes that will further accelerate the pace of innovation aiming to facilitate countries’ clean energy transitions by advancing the solutions and technologies needed to support national goals.

Taking a Mission Oriented approach, MI will focus on identifying key innovation barriers and decarbonization pathways in sectors seeking accelerated efforts and where commitments from governments and the private sector can send a strong signal to the market and innovators, thereby stimulating faster action.

MI will build on the Missions with ambitious and inspirational goals backed by voluntary commitments that can lead to tipping points in the cost and scale of clean energy solutions. To strengthen the global clean energy innovation ecosystem and accelerate collaboration and learning, MI members will also develop an enhanced Innovation Platform.

In addition, MI will continue its successful voluntary model, with members choosing to work together on crucial energy innovation topics. Further details about MI’s next phase and its membership will be announced at MI-6 in Chile.
